So my amanos must be going through their cycle at the moment. Males are doing odd darting motions all about the tank (tail in the air, flicking all around the tank), noted first pregnant female today and Males are all about another large female w/ very large ovaries today (riding on her back at the moment). Fun to watch, I'm guessing the magic happens when the lights go out (oddly similar to other species). It's funny too, noticing that my girls are now on the same cycle

My question is this. I know lots of people have tried to breed amanos (myself included) my last trial ended at day 14 w/ total loss of zoes. Does anyone in the states or overseas know how many cycles amanos have in them? (my main girls are 5 years old now - yup 5, but just only recently had males w/ them).

Also my pregnant cherries are entering week 2 (3 weeks to babies right?) and does anyone know how many cycles they end up going through in a lifespan? I looked on the posts, just interested in knowing population expansion problems and would like a number. 5 other cherries turing beat red w/ saddles this week.

So, just wondering about possible population control in my cherry/amano tank - just need a hand from those who breed.

I don't hink there are any predetermined breeding cycles in shrimp. As long as they are strong enough to breed, they will breed, provided everything else (i.e. water parameters, food etc.) is to their liking. They won't breed (or even if they do, young won't survive) if things are not optimal or close to it.

As for you amanos...if they are really 5 years old, that would be the oldest C. japonica I have ever heard of. That's pretty interesting...

Picked them up in Fort Collins CO in either late 2001 or early 2002. They lived in a very pathetic existence (single bubbler and overrun tank w/ java moss w/ barely any light) for about a year, was actually unaware that they were still there for almost 8 months (possibly 1 or 2 water changes at that time). They are much larger than the males - close to 2 inches in length. I recently finished school and can actually afford to keep them in a more enlightened lifestyle (w/ males). Now finally all have become berried and are very fulfilled. Actually thought one was sterile but just recently she became pregnant. They have made the road trip w/ me to Phoenix and are now happy in a 50 gal tank w/ other shrimp and community fish.

I isolate them in a 10 gal tank when about to give up the zoes. Otherwise they are happy algae eaters. They tend to be very carnivorous as well, eating the fallen members if it happens (cherry/amano tank victims). Anyway, might have survived so long due to decreased stress from not having to mate. Don't know. Anyway, they seem to like the r/o water - along w/ cherries its egg heaven.

Just wanted to know what the chances are of them living much longer and how quickly my cherries who just let go some shrimp will take to get back to berried.

The chances of your amanos living longer are good since they have lived this long and are pregnant/fertile. I have read that cherry shrimp can become berried again a few days after having their eggs hatch. In my experience it has taken a couple of weeks for my cherry females but they are still young. Keep us updated on your amanos and hope they live a lot longer

My amanos are 2 years old and the female is constantly berried. It would be nice if they live til 5 years old like yours.

My tiger shrimp female becomes berried again a day or 2 after dropping her shrimplets.
