Dwarf Shrimp vs Dwarf Crayfish

I have read
That it is OK to keep Dwarf Shrimp and Dwarf Crayfish in the same tank.

The question I have is.
With the young of both in the same tank. Would there be to much compitition for food between the young ?

I find that keeping Shrimp in the same tank as the crayfish.
The Shrimp make a good clean up crew for the Crayfish, But I want the Shrimp to be able to breed to.

With keeping so many different Species of Shrimp. And trying to keep 2 colonies of both.
I would like to keep the Number of tanks down.

But, if this does not work out with the Crayfish and Shrimp.
I will have to rethink it.

My crays like the bottom, and my shrimp like the middle and top, my snails like it everywhere. The crays get most of the sinking goldfish food, and the shrimp get most of the flake. The snails get what is left as they are slow, but boy can they push. No one goes hungry.

John,

I keep dwarf crays with snowballs. Snowballs are breeding like rabbits and crays are happy. I rarely see crays bothering the shrimp. I keep moss in the tank and floating najas grass to give the shrimp and crays two levels they can enjoy.

Thanks Newjohn,

Thats a lotta tanks! I bet the 125g looks really nice.

How many snowballs do you keep in the 10g? From what I have read in old threads it seems that you can have a greater number of shrimp in a tank, then you could have fish in the same tank. I am used to puffers, which have very low stocking levels. (Such as 1 puffer for a 20g long tank)

I have around 20 adult Snowballs in the 10gal tank.

I have around 400 RCS of different sizes in a 30gal breeder.

So, yes you can keep alot more Shrimp than fish in a tank.

Newjohn is correct, shrimp bioload is a lot lower than fish bioload. It is also best to keep shrimp in a "shrimp only" tank as most fish will eat baby shrimp and harass the adults.

Cool. Yeah, a species tank is really the only option for me, as my other tanks are all puffer tanks in which the shrimp would not last 5 minutes. Most of the time, I prefer species tanks over "community" tanks anyway.

I think i'll plan on putting 20 Glass shrimp in my 10g then. (Wow, that sounds like so many. I'm so used to having 1 or 2 things in a tank lol)

Perhaps I should go with less so I could add more types of shrimp.

Glass/Ghost Shrimp can grow alot larger than The Dwarf Shrimp.

A 10gal might be able to handle the bio-load, but, Does not leave much room to swim.

Just my thoughts

I kept about 15 american ghost shrimp in a 5 gallon tank for over a year. I didn't see issues. I wouldn't do it with what I know now because it must not have been nice for them, but they had plenty of plants and hiding places & the females had eggs all the time.

If I don't see eggs, I start to think something is wrong. If I do, how bad can it be?

I have just noticed.

That in a crowed tank, there seems to be less egg production in the females.

And fewer young serving to adult.
