What is in Your water

Hello Everyone
I was just changing my water filter cartridges.
And I thought I would share what they look like, only after 2 months.
As you can tell, the one on the left is the new one.
I know, they are not the same style, the one on the left is a better one.
But, when they are both new, they are the same bright white.
It is amazing, what is in your local water system.
And going into your Tanks.

Yeah, I use RO for all my tanks.
My well water has so much junk in it I don't even use it as drinking water...

You must change your filter cartridges, alot more than recomended.
I know a guy, that has so much Iron in his water ,it would stain the glass of his tanks.
And if not filtered, it all goes in our tanks.

how many stage have on you RO (the 2 john) ?
do you have DI ?

I don't actually own an RO unit, I buy the water from my LFS. I would have to spend a fortune on cartridges to get it in my house... years ago, within 24 hours of setting up my first 2 aquariums, there was a thick film of calcium covering all the glass. I later deciphered this to be from the cool outside water warming to tropical level, but it still gives you an idea of the crap in my water.
It makes me sick to drink it... Ack...

You should invest in a small R/O unit. You can get a 30 GPD unit for around $200 delivered. Even with the crap in your water the filter will last a year at that output. The pre-filters are inexppensive and costs me around $30 a year to keep up, R/O membrane & all. My system backwashes the membrane (like most systems) so the crap doesn't ruin the R/O unit. The pre-filters take out the chlorine (carbon) then the next ones polish the water to remove all the sediment. Besides fish and drinking water, my wife washes her hair in it. It isn't often you get to buy something for the fish & everyone loves it.

Hmmm, I have been thinking about it, but I'd have to talk to my parents and see. (I don't have that kind of money yet).

We bought a water distiller from Sears for $150 a few years back. We used it for drinking water because the water softener made the water taste bad. It does about 1.5g at a time, just start it at night and let it go. That might be cost effective, but it has no minerals or anything else in it, it is just pure H2O.
You just clean the minerals out of it every 2-3 months and you're set. No filters to buy or anything. It does use electricity. It boils the water into steam and recondenses it into a pitcher.
