It's an internal filter with a course sponge inside. I am not real familiar with filter lingo, etc. but it look like this one has slots on the bottom, sides and back-but I'm not sure if all of them actually are intakes, but I am guessing they are since they all get crud sucked into them. Can I make it safe for baby shrimp?

It's a 2.5g tank and filter is rated for 3g. I was wondering if I could put some pantyhose or or a big huge spong or something over the whole thing. I love this little filter - I'd rather not replace it. But I don't wanna burn up the motor and fry my fish.

You may have to remove and rinse the stockings as needed if they clog.

What I am currently trying was the breeding net from the isolation apparatus (don't know what they're called) used to isolate pregnant female whatevers from other creatures. The net is really fine and I don't think the baby shrimps will get through. I am still waiting for my eggs to hatch however, so once I get some concrete data I'll let you know.

You mean using the net over the filter or keeping the females and eggs/babies in the net?

Yucca - you don't have a problem with not getting enough water thru the panythose and into the filer and the motor overheating?

You can also try the reusable bags for aquaclear, I find they work well too.

Ha! I have a mesh filter bag that might work. Not sure how big the mesh is or how tiny shrimp babies are tho.

Where does the female typically lay the eggs anyhow? Are they in a clump somewhere? Or does the female give live birth? I'm gonna go research that I guess.

It won't work for the mini. The flow holes are too small. If you use panty hose, or anything that small t will plug in no time. I use these in my turtle tanks, but clean them daily. Turtles are a lot tougher than shrimp. Stick with the bubble filters if you don't want to do the UGF like I do.

Be cautious using panty hose if you keep Ottos or BN plecs in the same tank. I lost an Otto who's barbs got caught on them.

I meant to put the panty hose over the intake. As others have also said, it will clog, but it will be safe for shrimplets.

I use the pantyhose to cover my gravel vac when changing water. Before I started putting sponges over my filter intakes, I used pantyhose, and it did have to be removed and cleaned at least once a week.

I put a fine mesh filter media bag over the filter, and so far so good - hopefully it won't overheat the motor or anything crazy like that.
