Neocaridina Mutts or Something Else?
Well, I think I've made a boo boo and I really need some guidance. I bought some shrimp from someone on ebay labeled as "Rainbow Shrimp, Caridina babaulti". Well, obviously I realized that they were not babaulti but I still wanted them anyway because I want to breed as many types of shrimp as I can, so I bought them anyway. Out of the original 10 I received, eight survived. One was bright red, two were a blackish color and the rest were a yellow color. The only one that has carried eggs that I have observed is the bright red one and she has filled my tank with new shrimp within the four month span that I have had her. All of the babies are a variety of colors as well. I stupidly added a batch of red cherries to the tank, thinking that I had two different types of shrimp that would not cross. Now I'm starting to think that these are neocaridina after all, just not cherries and now I've gone and screwed everything up. I've got pics and I was planning to post them today, and now I am dismayed to find photos of Badflash's "mutt neocaridinas" on another thread.
So, is that what I've got as well? Do I need to start the almost impossible task of separating them now?

Hi shrimpbaby
First photo, the Shrimp has a interesting Pattern.
The shrimp to the right and back does not look like a RCS to me.
The second photo, It looks like 3 are RCS
The Third Photo, In the lower right hand corner, It look to be a young Ghost/Glass Shrimp
The forth photo, Is the large Shrimp, the same as the first photo ?
Good luck
John

Hi, Newjohn.
Indeed, the red ones that look like cherries in the first photo are indeed cherries. The black(or blue or whatever) and the yellow one behind it are my "mystery rainbow shrimp". Second photo, the bright red female at the front is my original extremely fertile female that came in my batch of "rainbows".
Third photo, yes, lol that is a ghost shrimp in the lower corner, the rest of the shrimp in the photo are confirmed cherries and some of these unknowns.
Last photo, yes, the dark shrimp is the same one as the first photo. I have two adult shrimp that are this color, and many of my offspring are showing this coloration as well.

Your best bet is to pull all the red shrimp out and put them in another tank. That is what I did. I then got good males from other stock as I had no way to tell the good males from the mutts. When something interesting came out of the mutt population, I watched until she had eggs, then moved here to another tank to start selective breeding. In a year or so I may have a good green cherry shrimp.

The Shrimp in my photo does not really look like the ones , on the varieties Pages.
I have to agree with badflash.
If you have the extra tanks. You will need to sort them out.
And work with them.

A Green Cherry ?
How about a Apple ?
You already have a Blueberry Crayfish

Those are all Neocaridina (except the for the glass shrimp of course). People who don't have any idea what they are selling, should not be selling anything at all. It's just not right.

I'm still going to need to get rid of some soon. Would it be frowned upon to sell them as Neocaridina sp. (not as RCS)? Should I cull the offspring? I really hate to do that but I don't want to distribute "mutt shrimp" either.
I'd hate for others to stick them in with their cherry populations. They are still cute shrimp though. Surely some people like them?

I would probably cull these rather than try to sell them. Even though you would honestly and fully disclose their questionable heritage, spreading these to other people's tanks makes it very likely that somewhere along the line someone won't be as honest as you are. You know how frustrating it has been for you to go through this, and preventing it from happening to others is probably for the best.
OF course, you could sell them to people who want to keep dwarf shrimp with cichlids and other inappropriate fish species

Be hoest about what you are selling. There are plenty of folks that just want the algae eating aspect of the shrimp. That is how I started out. Educate them on how to keep them alive & who knows?
If you are feeding the mutt population, you should stop if you don't want more. They will ive fine off of what grows in the tankif you have enough light, but their numbers will self limit.
