How does the egg fertilizing happen?

I have a few females, which appears to have eggs. I was wondering how the male fertilizes the eggs...

1. Does the female lay/drop the eggs and the males fertilizes them?
2. Does the male fertilize the eggs on the female?
3. Or if I see eggs, does that mean they are already fertilized by the male?

Thanks, but people still seem unsure...
I think it happens as they are being laid. During mating the males leave packages of sperm attached to the underside of the female near where the eggs come out. I've seen mating, but never actual egg deposition, but that is what I've read.

What I have seen is the mating occurs after a molt but before I see any eggs on the female. My eyes are not good enough for me to tell what they leave, but I believe there are packets of sperm left on the female's underside. The eggs will show up fertilized or not. If they are not fertilized, they will drop off in a few days.

That's how it happens. I had written about it in this forum quite a while ago and that's probably where badflash read it. It's scientific fact. The sperm packet gets attached to the genital opening of the female during mating. As the eggs are trasferred from the ovaries to the pleopods (through the genital opening) they get fertilized.

Ok. It may be a good idea to put that as an article or best yet, include the info in the shrimp varieties, including sexing as well. Maybe also compatibility with fish/shrimp, so as not to have repetitive questions.

I am almost sure , Mustafa will add articles and information.
When he can find time to do so.

He does update the Varieties pages, from time to time.

Just remember, we have to do a little research ourselves.
There is 36 pages of good information here. We just need to spend a little time, and do a little reading.

Has anyone seen the eggs being laid? I'm be interests to see if it just happens, or if the female actively attaches them. I've seen a female actively removing them, so I wonder if the reverse is also true.

It never occured to me before, but I assumed the eggs were laid in the same place they are carried until they hatch. I'm not familiar with shrimp anatomy, so where do the eggs actually come out? Are shrimp similar to amphibians, passing their eggs through the same opening as poop, or does their reproductive system have a separate opening/exit?

The genital opening on female shrimp is right where the walking legs end and the swimming "legs" (pleopods) start. The male organs are around there, too.

Great thread on the sexual anatomy and reproduction of shrimp! Just some key words for members searching
