I'm going to Singapore in a couple of weeks. Is shrimpkeeping widespread there? Is there anything I should keep an eye out for?

And, if the answer to that last question is 'yes', should I plan on trying to bring anything home? I seem to recall an earlier discussion about an importation permit that US travelers can buy, but now I can't find the thread. Can anyone advise me about that?

Since I'm in the midst of raising Amano larvae, I'd love to give C. Serratirostris a try -- no idea if anyone has them outside Japan, though.

I'm going to advise that you speak to US Fish and Wildlife. They should be able to give you the score on that. I say "should" because a year or so ago I tried importing some fish myself without the help of a broker, and I talked to two diferent people at F&W and got two different stories. One helpful and who made it sound simple, and one who was a regular fascist ("Uh huh...are you planning on ever breeding these fish? What will you do with the fry? Will you sell them? Because then it's not for personal use. If you trade them for anything, that's commercial too...You're seriously never going to breed them, hm?" Ridiculous). In the end, since I was getting such different stories from the people who supposedly knew, I gave up. Still, it's worth asking - I'm famous for my bad luck. You might also want to talk to an import broker.

A Broker, They also call them Trans-Shippers.

Just check out the local Auction sites, and alot of the out-of-the-US sellers use them.

Hi, greeting from Singapore! You will be pleased to know that there are a lot of people here in Singapore, into the aquarium hobbies, from planted tanks to fishes, shrimps, etc. Just check out aquaticquotient.com, set up by like-minded people. Hope i dont contravene any of your rules here! You will be pleased to know that our local fish stores (we called them LFS in short) sells all kinds of plants, fishes, shrimps too!

I'm an avid shrimp keeper and have had my Crystal Red Shrimp tank for more than a year now. Started out with 6 and am happy that the population has since grown!

There are many fish and shrimp hobbyists on this sunny island Singapore - if you knew where to find them. Some fish shops carry a wide range of shrimp - Yamatoes, cherry shrimp, wood shrimp, tiger shrimp, blue shrimp, Crystal Red shrimp, mosquito shrimp.. etc. Where will you be staying? We could help point out some of the fish shops you could visit!

As for bringing them back to the US, I'm sure it's gonna be difficult nowadays with the stringent security checks etc. But you could check with the relevant authorities, just in case.

I'll be staying in Little India, for about a month. I did look in to transport options, and I found a great page about the subject, here:

In short, it's quite possible, but also quite expensive. Especially with my airport, it looks like it'd cost around $150 in permits and fees, so I'd have to be VERY motivated. It might also work to find an importer who already has the necessary permits (as Newjohn suggested) -- that would shave $100 or so off the price. Most likely I'll just leave this to the professionals, though.

I'm really looking forward to my visit. Time will tell whether or not my traveling companions will indulge my desire to window-shop.
