Hello fellow shrimp lovers! :D

I'm not new to this forum but i decided to sign up a couple days ago and here is my first post. I figured my first post would be me telling you about my shrimp purchase last night, my Asian Filter Shrimp from...ahem...Petsmart  I normally never buy any livestock from here, actually this is my first livestock purchase from this store. I take that back, i purchased my mom a Finch in place of the one she had that recently passed away.

I felt sooo bad for the little guy well actually i think it's a little girl. I saw him about a week ago when i was buying some silicone tubing to setup my diy co2 and i wanted to purchase him so bad to try and save him but my funds at the time didn't allow it. I've been thinking about it ever since that day and decided to go to Petsmart last night just to purchase this little fellow and lo and behold he was still there. :)

The Petsmart employee instantly asked me as i walked back to their aquarium wall if i needed help and i told him i'd like that "marble shrimp" as they have it listed (also says the shrimp needs salt water to live in which i read is a lie) He didn't even ask me about the aquarium i was going to be putting him in. I know this is typical of Petsmart and any other chain pet stores but i was waiting for him to ask me questions but he never did. I should have drilled him with easy, simple questions us fish/invert lovers already know just to watch him squirm but my girlfriend was with me and i didn't want to embarrass her. Anyway, as he was chasing this guy around the tank i noticed another Asian Filter Shrimp dead floating around the tank as he scooped up my shrimp. I almost told the employee i didn't want the shrimp because of the dead one floating around. I didn't see the dead shrimp at first because it was lodged under their 'fake' driftwood but i kept quiet and told myself i'm saving the poor guy(or girl).

So i purchased this awesome looking shrimp and took him home to my 29g RCS/H. Rasbora/Oto tank. I acclimated him for about an hour and a half letting him soak in the plastic bag for about 45 minutes then very slowly adding some of my own aquarium water to the plastic bag. After an hour and a half of acclimating i poored the guy into a 5 gallon bucket and caught him in my fish net so i wouldn't have to poor that nasty Petsmart water into my thriving 29g tank.

I woke up this morning and he was on my driftwood just chilling there and occasionally sticking stuff into his mouth. Then he crawled on the underside of my driftwood. I had to leave for work (at work now, hehe) or i would have watched him all day.

I really hope he/she makes it because he's so awesome looking and i read on this site they're very easy going, gentle shrimp and won't bother any of my other tank residents.

That's my story. :)

I've noticed with most aquatic life, if it is active within the first couple days after purchase (ie, eating and not hiding all the time), they usually make it. It can be a rough couple of days for the guy on the other side of the glass though. Good luck! I've always wanted some filter shrimp, they are very cool.

I'm loving this shrimp more and more each time i watch him. He perched himself on top of my hygrophila polysperma right underneath the outflow of my HOB filter with his little microgranism catchers out :) . His color turned dramatically! When i saw him in Petsmart, he was a tanish, brownish color, now he's a darker red color. I hope this is a sign of better health.

The color change just might be a sign of better health :-) But the even better sign is your shrimp is actively feeding well :!:

Sounds like you have become truly attached to the little guy. Keep us updated and I hope all goes well.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on his progress of this little guy. I wish i had a digi camera, i'd take pictures and share them.
He really colored up. He's a dark red now with a white stripe going down the center of his back. Loves hanging out underneath my HOB filter outflow that flows down onto my hygrophila polysperma plants. :)

Cydric,

It sounds like you are doing everything right and your shrimp is responding well to your care.

My shrimp have that same nice red/orange coloration and also came home from the store somewhat brown/tan/grey.

Ok, that makes me feel better with you saying your shrimp had/has the same coloration as mine. :) I really like how he traps the microrganisms and that's his diet of food. He definitely has a good amount of water flow in my tank with my HOB filter. I'll keep everyone posted :)

Cydric,

I've made up a filter shrimp food consisting of very high quality flake food (Omega One), freeze dried brine shrimp, and Omega One veggie wafers. I grind this into a very fine powder and feed a very small amount of it to them a couple times a week to ensure that they are getting enough food.

You may want to try something similar. Just don't overdo the feeding because the powder can foul the water very quickly.

Oh, that's neat! How do you go about feeding it directly to the filter shrimp? I read about someone doing this with a turkey baster? Then i read someone said 'not' to do this because it'll mess up your water parameters but i guess if you know how to do it in a minimal way then you should be ok...

My aquarium with the filter shrimp has very high water flow from the filters (two Emperor 280's in a 37 gal). I just take a tiny pinch (and I do mean tiny) and drop it on the surface. The fast flowing water moves it all over the tank quickly and the shrimp get some of it in the process.

I've said it before, but I do emphasize a TINY pinch of powdered food. You don't need to make the food just like mine, just make a powder of whatever you have around and they should be happy with it.

Thanks a lot YuccaPatrol for the advice! I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes! I will do a TINY bit as to not over due it and mess up my water parameters. Thanks again!
