How long do amano shrimp live?

I have had this one female amano a little over 3 years, she was a just under half an inch when I bought her.

I rearranged some plants and was telling my husband she must have died because I had not seen her in a long time she crawled up and over the new batch of java moss. Interestingly, to me, she is very dark in the head area now, did not used to be.

anyone else have them live so long, I thought 2 years was the norm?

That is a good question and one that is still being answered. Paraphrasing Mustafa, if that is alright, from one of his post he said that their have been amano shrimp that have been known to live up to 5 years. The shrimp may even live longer, it's a matter of time when someone reports this and has a picture of a huge amanos shrimp

I know for sure that they can live to be 3 years old as I've had some for 2 years and they were adults when I got them.

The life-expectancy in captivity of pretty much all shrimp species is still up in the air. With amano shrimp it's easier to determine it as they don't breed in a normal aquarium setup and the keeper won't have to figure out which ones are the "original" shrimp and which ones are the adult offspring. That's pretty much impossible to do with species that breed readily like the red cherries. Unless someone keeps only male or female red cherries in a tank for years, it's going to be next to impossible to figure out the ages of individual shrimp in a colony.

So...the whole age determination issue is still a work in progress.

This is one of many issues that are still works in progress since the shrimp hobby is still a young one. If we continue to record and share what we find we will be able to resolve these issues! So let's get to work

well either the shrimp was a different one or just ate alot of algae. there a amano shrimps that is around 2 inches and i mean its better then mines,
it was like the size of a big crayfish

Where is this amano shrimp? They can get to be around 2 inches and I would not be surprised if they get larger than that. I have 3 females that are 1.5 inches and growing

The males a thinner but about 1.25 inches.

I have a Friend that has a single Female that he has had for almost 3 years and she 2" plus. She is huge.
I will see him tomorrow and I will try to get a picture. She is in a 180 planted tank.

Even if it is not My Shrimp

As soon as someone has raised Amano Larva to Adult Hood. they will have to make a report back in 2 to 3 years or more to let us all know.
What the life span is of captive Breed/Raised Shrimp.

By then Mustafa will be on his 2nd or 3rd book.

It will be helpful information. And they may even get there name mentioned.

I got her about two months ago so I have no idea as to her age.
