questions about "green midget shrimp"

Are the green midget shrimp at franksaquarium.com the same as the 'green shrimp' described in the Shrimp Varieties? It's hard to know since that site lists a much smaller size than Mustafa did in his description. Most importantly, I want to know if this variety also have a suppressed larval stage?
I don't have any of either green shrimp ATM so I'm not worried about potential interbreeding. I just want to know what to expect.
It's too bad that so many shrimp out there don't have certain species names. It would make communicating about them so much easier.

It's hard to give you an answer one way or another. It *should* be the same species, but you never know if you are getting the same species twice under the same name as lots of times many different species (that might or might not look similar) are imported under the same name. It's the luck of the draw in the end.

that you got from Frank or Mustafa? Sorry, it wasn't clear. If it was from Frank, then yes that does help.
I guess it is kind of a lottery. Sigh, so should I just order them and hope they're the ones I'm prepared to breed?

Hi Baby_Girl
I have order Greens from Frank 2 different times.
And a majority of the Shrimp that I received were Green Shrimp similar to the ones pictured in the variaties page.
And the rest of the Shrimp were similar in body shape as the Greens. and after a week they would turn a Dark Red color.
Males are hard to come by with Imported Shrimp.
Just remember if you order them from Frank. They may take up to a week to color up. They have been under alot of stress.
Make sure that they have alot of hidding places such as Java Moss and they tend to color up a little faster.
And they tend to be very Shy at first so you may not see them that often
But as Mustafa has stated.
Alot of Shrimp are shipped by exporters under the Green Shrimp name.
So, good luck if you decide to order.
I have not been dissipointed

thank you, John. That gives me confidence. I don't mind the ones that start out green and then turn red, they sound neat. Thanks also for warning me about the color taking a few days to brighten. They're going to have a wonderful new home with lots of moss and no one to bother them
John, have any of your Greens been breeding for you?

I have had berried Females.
From what I have read, they yound take forever to grow and with alot of Java Moss in the Tank. I have not seen any young yet.

I have a few that have bred, but it is VERY slow. They also seem to have fewer eggs. They are much more shy so I seldom see them except when I disturb the leaf litter.

thanks for all the input. Your comments have encouraged me to take the plunge and order them. I will cherish them whether they breed or not, but let's hope luck is with me and I get some babies

yup, my water will be great for them. KH = 13 degrees, GH = 8 degrees.
I am willing to be patient for babies. I understand that they don't breed as quickly as RCS. But they will be in a species-only tank

I MIGHT add a few small ramshorn snails if I have algae issues.
Does anyone have any opinions on whether snails will compete with shrimp for algae and other food? Since shrimp move faster, I figure they'd be getting to the food first.

Nevermind, I answered my own question by reading this thread
viewtopic.php?t=457&highlight=snails+compete
I guess I'll leave the snails out. No big deal, I didn't exactly have my heart set on them as much as the shrimp

Keep in mind that I have changed my mind since then (That thread is from almost 2 1/2 years ago). I now seed my tanks with pond snails and ramshorn snails. If you feed just the righ amounts for the shrimp (which is very little to begin with) the snails won't have anything left to compete over.

good point. I have ramshorn snails in all my tanks for algae control. I also breed them as feeders for some of my fish. So I'm very familiar with the idea that their populations will stay under control as long as I don't overfeed

Thanks for the reply!
