How often to add new genetic material?

Post by Colofishguy »

I've been keeping red cherries for a few weeks now and already have some new shimplets (not sure what the actual word is for them, fry perhaps?) Before the newly hatched ones I had 29 shrimp. I've just ordered another 20 from a different breeder on the other side of the country to add some genetic variety to what I'm working with.

Do any of you buy or trade shrimp from/with others to keep new genes entering the pool, or do you just go with straight inbreeding? If you do add new genes, how many shrimp do you add and how often?

20 gallon tank if that matters.
