Black Beauty Sand Substrate

Post by Cactus Bastard »

My shrimp were recently developing problems with their exoskeletons, and dieing off.
On suspicions of heavy metals in my water, I switched to Prime which can neutralize small amounts. I also added cutrisorb to my filter, to remove any further heavy metals from the tank, including any that may be leaching from the substrate.

This seemed to do the trick, as my shrimp are getting better.

I bought the substrate for this tank many years ago; it is a very glossy black sand, resembling chips of obsidian. I think it may be "Tahitian Moon Sand". Or it could be another sand called "Black Beauty" that is comonly sold in pet stores.

I found some very alarming information about the product “Black Beauty” that I thought all invert keepers should be aware of.

“Black beauty sand is actually Metallic Slag from the manufacturing
of copper. It is described as 32-45% SiO2; 25-33% Cao + Mg0; 24-35% Fe0.”

It is often marketed as “inert”, and safe for aquarium use. But logic dictates otherwise. I also found a person who tested the water that it was soaking in, and found rapidly rising levels of iron.

I don’t know if that’s what I have or not, and a search turned up zero results, so I don’t know if anybody else here is using it. It leaches iron like crazy, and could easily be contaminated with copper, or other metals used during the manufacturing process.

The stuff is sold as an industrial abrasive for sand blasting. I'd advise against using it.

Yeah, that's it's primary use. I don't think it's ever actually bagged up and marketed as a substrate except by the individual fish stores themselves. (When I bought mine, it was just in a bulk bin)
I'm going to try and find a sample to compare against what I've got.

So is Tahitian Moon Sand safe? It's only this "Black Beauty" that's not?

I have the TMS in two of my shrimp tanks and it looks so nice.

Yes, Tahitian Moon Sand is perfectly safe. As long as you know for sure that it's actual Tahitian Moon Sand. They look the same as far as I can tell from pictures on the internet, so I'm not sure what I have in my tank :?

If anybody here has seen both Tahitian Moon Sand, and Black Beauty, maybe they could point out the differences?

I phoned some of the industrial supply places in my area, but none of them carried it as a blasting media. And I haven't been able to find Tahitian Moon Sand in any of the pet stores either.

I bought my TMS online, so it came in a package that said "Tahitian Moon Sand". That's good, I think I'm in the clear. My RCS look so much prettier against the black and I've gotten a lot of compliments on the substrate.
