hello.

Im new to shrimps and this forum so hello.

Im not sure to worry or not, i have some ghost and cherry shrimps and i have today noticed that some (both types) have got whitish spots in them. Having looked at a picture of a shrimps anatomy i think its the stomach/intestine that has turned white.

Im hoping that its just because of the colour of their food. Ive been using a different algae pellet which is quite pale and breaks up into powder after a few minutes.

Is this possible/likely?
if not, what could be the cause?

Also, at the moment i just have them in a small nursery tank with some baby endlers and i was wondering if shrimps could be harmed by the live microworms (nematodes) i sometimes feed the fry with?

Welcome to the forum.
You would be well served by reading the articles on keeping shrimp in the articles section. It sounds like you are off to a bad start and the info there and the beginners FAQs are very valuable.

You should also re-read the rules. I'm not trying to be offensive, just trying to save you from getting flack. The rules are enforced here.

Keep an eye one the spots. They do not sound good to me. A cherry shrimp has a straiight line for a digestive system. There really shouldn't be any visible spots.

That looks like a saddled female, those are her ovaries. Here is a pic Suzie Q took of a saddled female. Is this what you are seeing?

Yes, thats it! just needed to do a quick search for the term 'saddled'
If i have read correctly, its to do with breeding and not a bad sign. Unfortunatly i havent seen a detailed explanation of what it is.

Is it simply a sign of a mature female or does it mean shes fertilised or ready to be fertilised? will it stay until she spawns or will it go if conditions change?

If you have some males it is good news. The saddle is just her ovaries loaded up with eggs. They still must be fertilized at her next molt, then the eggs move to her belly. About 4 weeks later there are baby shrimp.

That's because you still haven't read the beginner's FAQ as badflash asked you to do and as the rules here require. It's right there under number 2. So, once again, please read all the artices *thoroughly* and perform a few hours worth of searches in the forum before you continue to ask questions.

The rules are not there to scare off beginners here, but to encourage responsible, self-directed research to keep up the quality of the discussion in the forum.
