Quick update

Post by mikedmatthews »

seems like i never get around to checking posts here as often as i would like. too much going on!

quick update on my shrimp:
currently i have cherries, crystal reds, amanos, chinese tigers, blueberries (caridina sp), rainbows (caridina sp, the freshwater full larval ones), and blue crays.

i had 3 fully formed amano babies i managed to net out of the hatchery, but after acclimating the to fresh i did something stupid. i have one of those new acryllic fry separators that jehmco sells and it seems the pores may be large enough for them to squeeze through. i can't find them anymore at any rate. trying to start over. the last few attempts to catch the girls when they let the larvea go hasn't gone well, so i now have one set aside in a breeder trap off on her own. maybe i'll get some out of her this way.

i have babies off the others above except the chinese tigers (have berried female) and the crays. the crays were spawning, but i think i interrupted them before they accomplished anything because i don't see any eggs on the female even after a week. at least i know they are interested now!

No kidding, I have been away for a while and there are a ton of posts to read up on. I don't mind, this is what I like to do when I am relaxing.

Wow  , it sounds like you have a factory going on. How did you set up the tank(s) for the shrimp and crays?

Sorry to hear about the crays dropping their eggs. Hopefully the conditions will be right for them to carry to full term. How old are the crays by the way?

Thanks for sharing :D Keep us updated.

the crays are in a 40 breeder mainly sand and rockwork. i'm not sure if they dropped the eggs or if she just didn't lay them. i was watching pretty close to see if she had eggs so i could give her a tank by herself. i have 2 pair and they are all around 3-3.5 inches total length.

the shrimp are all in semi-planted 10's. i have a 10 gallon brackish hatchery that i've kept up even w/o new larvea being caught just because getting a new cycle on a sponge is such a pain. they really don't take up much room in my fishroom. i run about 100 tanks total, mostly fish. around here its hard to find new species unless you ship them in.

What exactly are "chinese tigers", "blueberries" and "full larval rainbows?". Do you have any pictures? If the "blueberries" are what I think they are (blue shrimp) then they are Neocaridina sp., not Caridina sp.

the chinese tigers i thikn are just tiger shrimp, but the guy i got them from called them chinese tigers and anubias design gets them in as chinese tigers so i kept that in the name. its some sort of neocaridina. fully formed shrimplets on release. they must be pretty sensative because i'm havign trouble keeping them alive.

the "full larval rainbows" - sorry, that's the best i can do. they are going around the upper midwest as rainbow shrimp and since you have indian dwarf rainbows shown as not having the larval stage and since certain shrimp selling websites sell those and not these, i'm trying to make sure i keep as much information on them as possible. i wish i had a good pic of them, but every shot has come out blurry, i'll try again. no idea why they called them rainbow, its a clearish shrimp. the only color seems to come from their food. when they drop larvea, they look like a little pinhead with a bent line attached. took almost a month before i had any big enough to look like shrimp.

the "blueberries" again i have no idea why that name is with them. they are a clear-brownish if that makes sense. i can kinda see a blueish cast to them, but sometimes they look green and sometimes they look red. i got them from stephan tanner. he's been working on figuring out what they are with some folks over in germany and they have suggested to him Neocaridina heteropoda, Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis, or N. palmata (he just got that new info this week). i have doubts on them being heteropoda - they act nothing like my cherries - much more active and very fast. i should probably try to do a side-by-side comparrisson. i'll try to get some pics of them. they're really prolific. in a month and a half, i've had several females berry up and drop ..fry? is that a proper word to use with these? at any rate, the tank is swarming with little ones. haven't tried to get a picture yet, but i'll see what i can do. i wonder if this is a case of them previously being blue shrimp because of their diet and then that diet being removed??
