I don't know if you have seen these YouTube video clips yet...
But they showed the process CRS jumped out of their exoskeletons...

Here are the links:

There are some more in the related video; but they are related to other topics...

Have Fun!

Great job documenting the molting process :o Next time keep it recording so we can see what they do until the new layer hardens

The title of this thread sounds absolutely gruesome. Imagine my disappointment.

I spotted those video clips on youtube a while back, I was quite surprised that the process happens so quickly. I had visions of shrimp struggling for quite some time when shedding their "skin". I haven't been lucky enough to witness this event first hand despite the many hours spent peering into my shrimp tanks. I had wrongly assumed that this was something that normally occurred under the cover of darkness, obviously this is not always the case.

I never fail to be amazed by the process. Even in my large crayfish, this final step goes quickly. If it doesn't they often die. They do take some time losening up the old shell before they finally pop it off though.

If you see them moving oddly and stretching at abnormal angles it is usually a sign they are about to shed.

I've seen a couple of my shrimp molt, but that video was still really interesting; you can really see how soft they are when they first come out. Thanks for posting that!

It sure is surprisingly fast! I saw one of my adult green shrimp females moult and it was almost violent. First she turned a sickly tan/orange, so you could tell she was working hard at something and feeling vulnerable. She remained like that, holding onto the sponge filter, for several minutes. It was like she was really concentrating and getting ready. Then, I saw her claws become 'double' as those were the first to separate from the old shell. Pretty soon after that, she burst out of the old shell in one swift motion, just like the CRS did in those videos. She quickly crawled away from the exuviae and promptly proceeded to hide, still tan in color. Now whenever I see her, she's always a nice green color.

I like how the cell phone was ringing in the second video  The guy filming was probably saying "shut up, go away" in his head :-D

Actually, the real interpretation should be:

"I'm busy now."

it could just be me, then  I always think 'Shut up, go away' if my phone rings when my hands are full.

Wow! This is indeed an eye opener. I've been keeping an eye on my shrimps for this special moment. Unfortunately, I'm always not there when it happens! :( It's like missing your baby's delivery into this world!
