Surface film causing deaths?

Hi All,

I made a post a few days back about losing some of my IZ Shrimp while the Malaya seemed unaffected....

After some serious thought I began to wonder what was different if anything about this tank? It is a 15 tall and other than that not much difference except it had only a HOB filter with a intake sponge.

The other 3 Shrimp only tanks I have have either a HOB or Canister filter with filter sponge plus a air stone driven sponge filter.

Where am I going with this? Well the air bubbles from the sponge filters was keeping a layer of film from forming on the surface allowing for better gas exchange, but the tank with problems had a film on top due to very little surface movement from the HOB outlet. Could lack of oxygen have been a factor here?

After adding a air driven sponge to the tank my shrimp immediately got more active and today are looking as though they haven't a care in the world and so far no more deaths. The most dramatic thing was their behavior after the film was gone...almost...well...joyous.

Thought I'd get a few thoughts on my theory...

Air exchange is essential. If nothing breaks the surface you end up with a protein/oil scum on the top. Not only does oxygen not get in, but bad gasses can't get out.

I'd say you are on the right track.

And it was your input that set me to thinking...Thanks and I hope indeed I am on the right track. For now crossing my fingers and keeping a close watch.

Lessons are somewhat hard learned in this hobby.....
