I was going to invest in a macrobrachium or a puffer fish because they were breedin' like loco! I need some of this. :smt093 and even more of this! :smt106

What type of snail? If you have have Malaysian Trumpet Snails, which can seal their shells shut, a Macrobrachium will not be able to do much damage...they might get one once in a while. But most Macrobrachiums can tear through Ramshorn and Pond snail populations.

Having said that, most Macrobrachium will also eat any small, algae eating shrimp they can catch and also small fish that sleep on the ground at night.

Why don't you just pick the snails by hand?

Puffer owners will pay money for snails--ramshorns and pond snails (not Malaysians).

I agree with that, I have my puffers with 2 female Macrobrachiums and 4 ghost shrimps ... so far, they are doing well in a 10 gallon and everyone stays out of the shrimps' way ... that includes the puffers and Kerri tetras as well.

Cheers :-D

Snails are almost impossible to wipe out unless u get some puffers.. . how ever it will take a longer time and during tat period of time MORE SNAILS will be reproduced!! I tried in the past to put some anti snail solution into my tank and it work! However it is not recommended as it may harm yr fishes or shrimps if u over add it..

Using hand to take them out 1 by 1 is quite troublesome and u will feel irritated as you can't grap hold of those baby snails. Right now.. whenever i buy plants , i will check if there is any snails or snail ' s eggs before i put it into my tank!

Just as an FYI many loaches are great snail killers. Clowns are what I use in my 55 gallon planted tank, and I never see any snails!

Loaches are also great shrimp killers, especially clowns, so it's not a good idea to have them in a shrimp tank. Of course individuals can vary.

Clowns are ultimate snail killers. I havent ever known any that didnt go for them. My kuhlis eat the odd snail but are too lazy really. Plenty of other loaches do I think tho.....

Also, you could consider fighting fire with fire. Snails that eat snails..... Malaysian Trumpet Snails will eat other types of snail, turn over your substrate and eat rubbish in it, and DO NOT eat growing plants. I use them in all my tanks except the puffer one!

I didnt notice my Macrobrachium ever eating snails, but its a possibility. They might not have gotten a chance with the MTS and clown loaches I have tho  8)

I think Snail Away type treatments use copper dont they??? Copper + shrimps = no way. Anything that kills snails, is likely to hurt all inverts.....
