Tank set up & unknown shrimp ID

Post by steve123 »

Hey guys how's it goin I'm new to the forums and I have a few questions. First off I'd like to thank mustafa for all the great info on this site, very informative. Ok so I bought some shrimp from AAG (Arizona Aquatic Gardens) was my first time buying shrimp and probably my last from them. The site seems to be a bit misleading since they claimed all their fish are compatible with shrimp and im finding that just isn't true. I have 2 tanks one 50g with angelfish and a 50g tropical community fish tank. Upon arrival of the shrimp I immediatly added them to my community tank and watched their numbers dwindle over the next few days. I didn't have an extra tank for these little guys but I couldn't just sit there and watch them die either so I went out to the store and bought a half gallon tank added gravel from an established tank put the remaining 4 shrimp and 3 small plants in it and plopped it in my 50g tank I want to add a foam filter to it and I was curious if this idea would work or not. I figured half gallon tank would be best inside the large tank so no ammonia or nitrates build up in the half gallon tank, this is just temp. Since money is tight. Here's a picImage (thoughts & suggestions?) ok my second question is I got some shrimp from AAG and they sold me something called black forest shrimp, however my shrimp do not look like theirs although similar and there is 0 info on the net about these shrimp and no other pics. It looks like a bee shrimp cept it has 2 bands of brown and clear, which looks really nice, pic attached sorry its blurry bad camera

It's a bumblebee shrimp. That outfit makes up names as they go. Do yourself a favor (although its kind of too late now) and search for arizona aquatic gardens in this forum. There are lots of reports/experiences about them here (including mine)...none of them positive. In fact, I have personally *never* heard from anyone who has had a good experience with that outfit. Just search and you will see. You can eve search Google and see lots of negative experiences with AAG in various forums spanning back years.

After that, *thoroughly* read all the articles on this website and search all kinds of topics that you have questions about in this forum. That could have saved you a lot of trouble and will save you more trouble from now on (plus it's part of the *Rules* here...see the Rules section). You'll see that it's almost never a good idea to keep shrimp in community tanks with fish. Your temporary solution is just that...temporary. It does not cost a lot of money to buy a ten gallon tank (about $8.00 to $12.00 for the tank depending on where you get it). Cycle it properly and transfer either the fish or the shrimp in there. Chances are that your shrimp will die by then anyway...not necessarily because you did something wrong, but because AAG likes to send half-dead and dying animals to unassuming customers. Since newbies have no idea what a dying shrimp looks like, they just assume that's the way the shrimp should be. So...your shrimp may have gotten eaten by your fish, or they just died because they were already in bad shape when they arrived. Everyone who ever reported their experiences with them here had the same ones....dead and half-dead shrimp arriving at their doorsteps...many times not even the shrimp you ordered since they "substitute" at will with any shrimp they want.

Anyway, time to do your research. :)

If they aren't bumblebee shrimp they are regular bee's. Someone else I know got those also and the ones that showed up alive looked like Bees. The picture they are currently using is of a Sulawesi shrimp (not their own picture either). Previously they were using a stolen picture from highfins in China of his "super" tiger shrimp, they even went as far as to photoshop out the watermark he had on his picture. They have just been changing the picture of the shrimp when someone catches that they have stolen the one they are currently using.

Yeah...could be bees too as it's really hard to tell from the picture above. Having said that, you could get any shrimp from that outfit...not necessarily what's advertised...there's no way of knowing with them. So, the guy you know may get bees, and another guy may get bumblebees or something completely different. And yes, they do "borrow" both pictures and information (information from my website, too) without really crediting anyone or asking anyone. I can't believe "Peter" (the owner of that outfit) hasn't learned anything over the years and continues with the same old unethical practices.
