Right now I have about 20 amano shrimp larva that are 15 days old. I have read that these shrimp could metamorph into post larva shrimp at day 30 -60. How will I be able to recognize a metamorphed amano shrimp? Also when they metamorph should I put them in fresh water? Right now they are in salt water that is about 1.020 -1.021 in specific gravity.

Hi Ben,

The postlarvae are just miniature versions of the adult and don't float anymore (they walk around like the adults). Yes, you can put them back into freshwater after they are postlarvae although I don't know how they would take a direct dip from saltwater into freshwater. I would mix their saltwater with freshwater for about 15 minutes to half an hour or so gradually to get them used to the freshwater.

ok sounds good Right now ~ 20 are in a 10 gallon tank with some places to hide. How hard do you think it will be to find these small post larva shrimp in a ten gallon tank. Should I start a small tank and put them in there? or leave them be and try to find them when they go post larval

i've read that amano's can go from salt to fresh w/o acclimating them slowly. in their natural environment, they supposedly get swept out to sea from natural forces, so they have to adapt from fresh to salt rapidly and vice versa. don't know how much truth there is to it, so i think i'd rather follow the advice of mustafa and acclimate slowly.

i can only hope one day my amano's will breed and gift birth to loads of baby shrimp. glad u've had success! good luck!
