a new tank for halocaridina rubra

Post by loraxchatter »

How much Instant Ocean seasalt do I need to mix with water to set up a new 10 gallon tank? I've got a one gallon jar with lots of breeding halocarindina rubras. I want to move some shrimp over to see if I can breed more.
Also, can I put coral rock or dead coral into my new tank? Will that affect the water? All I have in my original jar is some gravel and 1 lava rock--I started out with 10 shrimp , and now I have over 40. The jar give to me had 1/2 strength sea water.

Buy a hydrometer . The floating one's are cheap enough and work or you could use one which stays in water .

They are under $10 and your going to need one if your worried or looking for a certain salinity.Plus when you do water changes, etc you need one or your salinity will be off .

First, get yourself a weighing scale and a measuring cylinder.

You can use aquarium sea salt and bring the salinity to 8 - 10 ppt(part per thousand).

To get a 8 ppt salinity, you put 8 gram of salt for every 1000ml of water.

To get a 10 ppt salinity, you put 10 gram of salt for every 1000ml of water.

According my research, very few people succeeded breeding under 10 ppt.
People who succeeded, average is about 20 ppt or 70% of salt water.
One person reported that it is possible if ppt is between 10 and 30.
