Urgent!!! shrimp dying...

Hello all,

New to shrimp keeping and it's not going well...

I have a TMC aquagro microhabitat 8. 8 litres. This is a fully setup aquarium heavily planted that i purchased on ebay 4 weeks ago. It came with one crystal red shrimp. I have been doing water changes with bottled spring water once a week since i got the tank. There have been no problems. So last weekend i purchased 6 cherry red shrimp and 4 celstrrial pearl danios. Fish are doing well but one of the new shrimp dyed yesterday and now one more is dead and at least one other is looking bad.... yesterday after finding one dead i did a 2 litre water change. I thought it was just an introduction thing a that one mortality is to be expected... now two more are bad i'm concerned!!

My test kit is at home (tanks on my desk in my office) so won't be able to test the water till tommorow. The tank is a a stable 24.2 -25.5 degrees C depending on the time of day.

What should i do?? Suggestion welcome. I'm concerned that either i have an ammonium spike or the bottled water is unsuitable. However the CRS has been fine for a month???

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jim

Where did you buy your shrimp? Sounds like improper shipping (either to the store or directly to you) to me. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do if that is really the case. The weak ones will die off no matter what you do.

Ok,

So day 10 or so after the introduction and half the shrimp have died... 3 out of 6 left. However the surviving ones seem to be doing fine and eating well etc...

Tested the water and there was no ammonia spike.... Must have been an introduction thing. I suppose that's a relief but it still sucks!!

Oh well... hopefull these three and the Crystal Red S will prosper and i'll get some babies at some piont to make up the numbers...

How long do you think i should be waiting before i get babies (Presuming they're healthy and i have males and females)??

Also will the Red Cherry S and Crystal Red S interbreed??

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

There is no such thing as an "introduction thing." Either the shrimp arrived in terrible condition and died or your tank has not fully cycled yet (even if ammonia is 0) or both (especially since your tank has only been running for 4 weeks). When I put shrimp into a new tank I just net them and throw them in...no slowly dripping water or anything. If the tank has good conditions for them they just start picking at food right away. There is also no set time as to when you will see young. It all depends on your tank conditions...and no...they don't interbreed. I recommend using the search function for further answers since many of these questions have been asked and answered for many years on this forum. It can only help.
