Tiger & Tetra can be friends

Post by beckypyyeung »

My medium to big tigers live in the big tank and small tigers in the breeding tank. I found something interesting when they dined tonight. I gave them a pellet of sinking food. Surprisingly, one of my tigers fought for the food with my cardinal tetra :D I thought shrimps were shy.

About 10 cardinal tetra were concentrating on the small pellet of food, then one tiger tried to find a place in the crowd. One nosy cardinal tetra nibbled the tiger. The tiger was not scared at all. It just stepped back for about one centimeter and fought for the food with them again.

The shop-keeper of a fish shop has advised me to introduce new tankmates into the tank when the old members are eating. That may distract their attention and then they won't attack the new members. Based on my own experiment, it really works. Shrimp friends here may try.

The tigers were swimming around. The tetra were not interested in them at all. They just took a glance at the shrimps and swam away. I'm happy to see that they can get along well.

Hi Ljung,

I also feed my tetra every day and every one of them get some food. I worry about overfeeding and cloudy water, and therefore I don't give them much food. They swallow all I give them within one minute.
But I'm glad to hear that shrimp babies can live with them. That really surprised me.

The hatchlings and the tetra don't really "live" together or "get along." The tetras *will* devour any young shrimp that's out in the open. There is no question about it. However, if you have a densely planted tank a number of hatchlings will probably survive (hiding in the vegetation) to keep the shrimp population going or even have it increase slightly.

That's a far cry from the fish and the young shrimp "getting along" :-D.

ya and sorry for any misleading message that i have posted...
on top of what i have posted, i would like to stress again, as commented from Mustafa, that it is very important to have a heavily planted tank if intend to keep both fish and breed shrimp in the same tank.
