From what I have read, these crabs will go after the algae in a very aggressive manner. They are known to keep tanks clean and free from algae. I suspect that would not work out for the Opae, who depend upon that algae. Also, I would like to know if such crabs can live in an unfiltered and unheated tank with no circulation.

Hi Harry,

From what I've noticed the hermits (at least in my tanks with live rock) don't go after the same foods as the opae ula. They tend to spend most of their time on the live rock while the shrimp target the sand, the tank surfaces, the sponge filter and the barely noticeable algal film on the under surface of the water.

The filter in the bookshelf tank barely trickles and the heater is unplugged.

One of the hermits... Some great coralline algae on it's adopted shell.
