I hope Mustafa knows this one
We bought these guys in Germany. They're called Neocaridina palmata, but the pictures whe have are really lousy. This shrimp is bright blue with bright red insides, when you take a picture either the red shows up or the blue, it's difficult to make a really good photo with both colors showing.
The insides are supposed to be red because of a special fungus. I wonder if the red disapears in they don't feed for some time on food containing this fungus, I'll let everyone know in a couple of months.
The question is - whay kind of fungus is this? Anyone know were I can find some info on the matter?

Oh, we called this shrimp "Tangerine", the insides look like miniature tangerines, to us at least

The colors inside the shrimp will not show up in the offspring. As to what the reason for the coloration might be, everything right now is pure speculation, even the fungus hypotheses. There is really not much info on this shrimp on the internet at all. There is a little bit on wirbellose.de but not much. If you are hoping to keep the coloration in the offspring, forget it.
It's not going to happen.

Sorry Jackie.
That's, unfortunately, the reality with some shrimp. I am speculating that some shrimp have artificial coloration (just like some artificially colored fish from asia). The so called "Blue Shrimp" that have been sold recently also do not produce any blue offpsring. Their offspring just look like "normal" Neocaridina denticulata (sinensis). N. denticulata in general can be very variable but I have never seen a naturally blue one. I am suspecting that the coloration in the inside of your shrimp might also be artificial...but that's just speculation on my part. Either way, the offspring never have that coloration.

It's mentioned in a Singaporean book :
"The transparency of this fish has lent itself to the unscrupulous (and cruel) practice of injecting coloured dyes into the tissue to artifically enhance its colours by some dealers. Most of these fishes do not live long, and the colour is not permanent.

We have these shrimp in Canada - they're sold as "redback" shrimp. I have a couple of them...
