What does volcano rock do for my shrimp?

Hi, im new to this forum. I was wondering what volcano rock does for my shrimp? Whats the purpose?

Adds more surface area for biofilm to grow. Aesthetics.

If you use ocean rock this will buffer your tanks pH when it becomes too acidic.


Edit, just to say ocean rock is dead live rock, don't put live rock in as this will die off with what ever is living in it and create alot of ammonia.

Sure. I went to a fish store and bought scrap pieces of base rock and put it into my tanks. Also bought some scrap pieces of coral. I am sure they act as of of buffer.
