Hi Shrimp Friends,

I found it hard to resist the temptation and bought a pregnant Cherry on 26th February. There were around 30 to 40 eggs in her transparent abdomen. I could see around 6 babies in the water yesterday morning (3rd March) and about 20 eggs inside her abdomen. Then there was no more eggs inside when I returned home last night. I could see around ten babies then. Today I can see four babies (4th March). They swim or walk or stand still. I have some tiny gravels and a Java Moss Floor for them in the breeder tank hung inside the big tank. There are full of hiding places as they're so small in size. Any shrimp friend here knows about the death or the survival rate of baby shrimp? I could see so many eggs in her but there are not many babies.

The babies are extremely tiny and they're just visible. I want them to grow bigger, well, to at least 5 mm in length. Now I have realized how much patience it takes in breeding.

well dun worry..... if u got a stable tank, the population will explode once u got more shrimps...

The population will explode? Wow, it sounds marvellous !

I've given them a small section of water plant which is full of algae and I can see about seven babies on it. Perhaps they're eating the algae.

nah.... mine live on aglae.

anyway, if u feed the adult shrimps there is certainly some leftovers for the shrimplets.

I returned home a moment ago. It's night time now. Wow, they showed up when it was dark. I could see 16 babies

It was five hours ago when I wrote the previous mail. Now I can see 22 babies !

The maximum number of baby cherries I could see days ago was twenty two. But recently the maximum is around just five or six. Don't know if they're hiding or they died.

It probably depends on what kind of hiding places you have in the tank. I had 5 cherries holding eggs at the beginning of Feb (all first-time mommies) and now have at least 50 in the tank. I can't even work out who hasn't released babies yet or who is holding eggs again.

Of course, the babies are so small that if they go on the other side of a stem, you can't see them. I find a lot come out onto the gravel at feeding time.

I have my Cherry Red shrimps in a 20 gal tank all by themselves. My shrimps hides a lot and especially the ones with eggs.

Is that how they are with you guys too?

I was expecting them to be all over the place since there is nothing out there harressing them.

I usually see the females with eggs come out when it's feeding time. Even then, they come, get their food and leave, while the others hang out after dinner. Other than that, the egg-carrying females seem to prefer to be somewhere secluded. The babies seem to be out most of the time.

The maximum number I could see in the first few days after they were born was 22. Now they are about 18 days old, I have counted them carefully and can see that I have a total of 8 now. The survival rate is lower than I thought. Anyway, it's funny to have some babies.
