Sick shrimp?

Post by JennyPenny »

This morning I noticed one of my shrimp (the one that berried a free weeks ago but dropped the clutch) has this weird green stuff in her pleopods. It looks like some of the macroalgae broke off and is in them but I have a hard time believing that could happen. Is the shrimp sick?
It's the darker red shrimp in the first picture. I wish I had a better camera!

Another picture:

It looks like two small green pieces. Very strange!
I do not feed this tank.

Can't really see what you are talking about in the pictures, however if the shrimp is behaving normally I doubt it is sick. Doesn't answer where the "green stuff" is coming from but I doubt you have anything to worry about. This is a somewhat uninformed opinion of course. ;-)

You know some of my shrimp get algae caught in their little legs. I've seen a few just hanging out ' holding' a chunk of algae.
I'm no expert, but I think your little guy is ok. :D

The green bits are still there. I'm hoping they will go away after it molts.
Aloha919, I'm hoping you are right!
Varanus, it is behaving normally.
I will update with any changes or if I can get better, closer pictures. Thanks!

Molting will definitely get rid of it ^^

If it's swimming and grazing as usual, there's nothing to worry about.

The green on this shrimp spread slowly but is now completely gone. I believe the shrimp molted about 5 days ago, even though the molt I found had no green bits in it, and that got rid of whatever was on her. She is berried again, but this time with only two eggs! Hopefully one of these will hatch.

This shrimp did drop her egg.
Now I have two shrimp that have the green in their pleopods. It seems to go away when they molt, only to come back in a few weeks. I have a berried shrimp releasing larvae today that has this green on her pleopods.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a shrimp with the green on her pleopods.

The pictures are a bit fuzzy, but it's likely a piece of algae stuck there. It can happen sometimes.
