				A Shrimp Tank Without Facilities

Today I saw a small shrimp-only tank in a fish shop. There was less than one litre of water in the tiny glass tank. A little patch of java moss and some gravels were inside. Initially I saw two shrimps swimming there. The label read 'Rainbow Diamond Shrimp'. I took a closer look, wow, I found over a dozen of babies in there living with the two adults. The babies were just around 2 mm to 3 mm long but I could see their white stripes clearly. They looked happy coz they were swimming and walking around. There was no filter, no pump, nothing at all. I wonder if this species is super easy to take care of and that's why they could even reproduce in such a small living environment.
Can shrimp stay healthy in the long run under the above living conditions ?

I have a small shrimp only tank in my office. (L 6" x w 6" x h 8"). No filter, just some gravel with a small piece of drift wood and nana plants.
I do minimum water change once every 2 weeks.
There are 4 cherries, 3 tiger, 3 bee, 2 red nose, plus 8 shrimplets.
So far only 1 bee died since I set it up 2 month ago. So, I think shrimps are pretty hardy creatures. Just need to keep the water cool.

As I have some baby tigers and baby cherries now. I'm considering whether I should set up a small tank of shrimp in my office. I have a place for a small tank, but I can't connect any electricity.
I haven't made up my mind because I'm not sure if they'll be happy in a tank without a filter or an air pump. I can only give them plant and gravels.

Most likely they would not go well in that enviornment. I once had a self contained 12 gal
http://www.marineland.com/products/cons ... ystems.asp and they went on having babies like crazy.

i think they are people in Singapore who keep shrimps in filter-less airpump-less tanks, but they still got the shrimps to breed.
U can check it out at

All the best !

				Hi Kenny,
Thanks a lot for your information.

I'll check it out before I really set up a small tank in my office.

Finally I set up a tiny shrimp-only tank four days ago. Now I have a total of over 50 tiger babies. The first day I sent two babies there to see how they would go. Then they were still alive after two days. Then I sent a few more there and they're still fine now. There are only Java Moss + gravels + water in this tank. I'm going to take it to my office where there is air-conditioning all the time. I believe the water can remain cool then. And I wish to spread this hobby to my colleagues.
