Just starting out

Post by sea15823 »

Hi all! I've decided to start a small opae ula tank (1 gallon). I've read many helpful threads on this website and got lots of good information. I mixed up an appropriate amount of brackish water, thoroughly washed gravel and decorations with distilled water. This was 3 days ago. My question is, is it too soon to order Mustafa's macroalgae and the snails? What will the snails eat already? I do have an led light shining on the tank 12 hours a day the last few days but I'm sure nothing's grown yet.
Thank you for any advice offered.

I ordered snails and algae soon after setting up and everything has gone fine. The snails are very tough and they and the macroalgae will help speed the cycling.

I did put a tiny bit of food in there when I first got the snails just in case, but it may not have been necessary. The snails don't eat much, and biofilm develops rapidly in a tank. Still the snails will like a bit of extra food when first starting out. Just don't add shrimp until the cycle is completed.
