Montana/Idaho lava?

Post by Euphotica »

I have lava rocks from Montana, Idaho, and Washington state. Anyone know any reason they would not be as good as Hawaiian lava from the opae ula's home area? Anyone have any problem with any kind of perforated lava rock releasing toxic substances or anything?

I used some California lava rock with no problems. I washed and scrubbed it really well and rinsed with distilled water. It's been in my tank for about two years now. My shrimp love it!

It should be fine. Just rinse it in tap water and throw it in there. If you're afraid that some dead bugs or other organic material is stuck in the little holes of the lava rock, then you can soak the rock for a few hours or so. That should leach out most of their organic pollution potential. :)
