I noticed tonight I have a shrimp that is kinda just hanging out in one spot. He's picking away in his spot, but he isn't moving around much. It looks like a section of his body near his tail just isn't moving the same as the others. Like he's stiff. His swimmeretes appear to move, but not fluidly. Kinda jerky and spazzy.
Is it possible for shrimp to become paralyzed? Could he just be molting? I've never seen a molt in action, so don't know what it looks like.
I did end up having to transfer my 2 surviving shrimp from the small jar to the large as I lost another one today. I have no idea if this shrimp was one of them, but if it is, maybe I injured him in the move? I feel like I'm losing control of the situation here.
Its possible its simply been effected by the contaminant and the effect was slow to show. From what I've read shrimp just for some reason have a limited ability to recover from contamination compared to many other animals. Basically once the damage is done it may be permanent. At this point I'm not sure what you can do other than wait though.
I don't think he made it. I came in this morning and there was another dead one. I can't be certain, but I think it was this one. This sucks.
Yes, at this point, I guess all I can do is wait and see. The rest of the shrimp seem normal and happy (but then, that's what I always think before I find a dead one). But provided the deaths subside, would that mean the environment is stable and it would be OK to put more shrimp in there eventually? I'm planning on starting an actual tank after this debacle with the house is done and was going to grab a few extra shrimp with my order to replenish the large jar. I haven't decided yet if I'll reinstitute the small jar again (after scrubbing it, replacing the substrate and changing the water, of course. I'd like to keep the shells and decor though to help kick start the next round.) But that will be another few months from now at least.
