I was curious what is a good stocking level or maximum for a shrimp only tank-no fish?

it depends on the size of the shrimps.

I'm pretty sure that I have read that in a 40l tank you could keep a 100 shrimps (like red cherry etc.).
What do you think?

not sure if this is reliable... but

and on the bottom of each species, there's a stocking amount.
ie. 1 per 1/4 gallon etc...

cool thx for the replies. I have been getting something like 100 shrimp from about everyone I talk to as long as they are the smaller species.

I am not a big friend of stocking level formulas. With any aquarium animal you have to use common sense when deciding how many animals of a given species to keep. It all depends on how large the animals are, how large the tank is, how willing you are to perform more frequent water changes when you have more animals, how well established your biological filter is, whether you have plants or not...etc...etc..etc. Hence no single formula can express all these factors.
Start with fewer animals and go from there. Undercrowding is *always* better than overcrowding. And putting 100 shrimp all at once into any tank except the very large ones will overload the biological filter and many shrimp will die. The fish won't notice much, but the shrimp will as they are more sensitive.
