It's a 2.5 gallon and I think it's been almost 3 years since I've started it. I'd say there's 35-40 shrimp and and like 20 snails. Very rough estimate though. The last time I fed it was probably around 3 months ago and a total of 3 or 4 times before that. I fed one or two flakes of normal fish food and that's that.

IMHO there's not enough nutrients in there to jeep the macro algae going.

Personally I would feed some freeze dried spirulina. Maybe 1x a week for 4 weeks and then stop. This will accommodate for the increase in population. As far as feeding enough to get the macro alge going and growing that's a matter of probably feeding even more. Just needs to be in balance but since they are breeding to would be more concerned that the tank is doing going and if the algae dies it dies. It's a sacrifice. Why disrupt how well it does regarding breeding.

That's true. My only concern was the ammonia levels and they seem to be around zero for now, but thank you all.
