How to skin a sea fan?

Ive been reading that sea fans have skin that must be removed before adding them to a tank as the skin will decompose over time and foul the water. I recently bought some that look like the kind in the original ecospheres as I think the simplicity and design is pretty. However I’m not sure if they are safe to add to the tank nor know how to check or make them safe for use. Can anyone tell me how to go about this process?

I also had a sea fan from an ecosphere and was told by numerous ppl to remove it.
It was about 4 years old. Thinking about getting another one.
