Re: New tank mate
I’m having trouble posting the picture, it is a red claw crab that I added to the Opae tank.
Re: New tank mate
I have to warn you. Red Claw crabs love to kill and eat snails. They also have to be fed regularly. Whether it will prey on the shrimp, I don't know. They also do not require the salinity level that the shrimp do. I have one and I keep him in water that is half the salinity of my Opae tank. One more thing. Red Claws need a dry area they can climb out of the water on to. I'm not saying it's ideal but my Red Claw lives in a 1.6 gallon clear storage container with fine grain gravel sloped from one side to the other so he has a dry area and an area with less than an inch of water. He has a piece of lava rock to climb on and a cichlid cave to hide in when he wants. In nature they live in very shallow mangrove flats and since they are extremely hard to breed it is almost a certainty that any one you buy has been caught from the wild.
There is no filter so I do an almost complete water change every 3 days. He eats Crab Cuisine, Bug Bites, Bloodworms, shrimp pellets, and one of his favorites is a thawed and deskinned frozen pea. I got PetSmart to give me about a dozen pest type snails and one by one, they were consumed.
Personally, I would not have one in with my Opaes or any other kind of shrimp or invertebrate.
