odd alge

my dads 60 gallon tank has a rock hard alge on the side i tried rubeing it off but it doesnt, i have to use my nails.and the alge eating fish diead of starvation becuse they ate faster then the alge could grow back. now its starting to run rampit in the tank and i took of the gravel and water and put it in my tank iam worryed it will grow in my little does any one know what it is?
