Microbial Life of Anchialine Pools

Post by rhizotron »

Hi group. I'm a new member here. I have kept Opae Ula in the past, years ago, and I'm pondering a new nano tank setup.

I have a special interest in the Bacteria and other microbial life of aquatic habitats. The anchialine pool Halocaridina habitats feature a distinctive microbial ecosystem including the bright orange Schizothrix Cyanobacteria, among other microbess. Have any hobbyists tried to grow these organisms in their brackish shrimp setups?

I wish the kits you can get for microbial life had brackish but all they seem to have is either fresh or salt.

Delayed reply, but here goes.

I don't know anywhere at all that sells the appropriate microbe strains except utex.org, and they are extremely expensive. If you want to shell out $125 you can get the Schizothryx calcicola and a number of other species that form the microbial mats but the price is high enough to make them unobtainable for most.

This makes me sad. I'd love to get my hands on a bunch of those strains.
