Latest tank and yellow Opae sub-population

Post by Corucia »

I wanted to share with the group my latest Opae tank, which I set up around 18 months ago. It’s my second largest tank at around 8 gallons and I used a large Pyrex laboratory reactor. In particular, it’s the only tank of my five that has bred some hybrid Opae that are bright yellow in color. There are five or six of these yellow examples in the tank and they frequently congregate together as a sub-population. Curious of others have seen this behavior to the extent you have similar hybrid populations.

What a gorgeous tank..and those bright yellow opae ula are absolutely stunning! Are they from Mustafa’s stock, or a different source?

I have been keeping opae ula for over twenty years, but I have never seen anything like those yellow beauties in my tanks. 🤩 I find it fascinating that they tend to hang out in a group. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the kind words Aquarimax 🙏. The Opae did come from Mustafa’s stock albeit they have been breeding across my tanks for over a decade so they have many generations of offspring. This tank was initially seeded from two different tanks where I took both adult and juvenile examples (and one berried female). Not sure if cross breeding between the populations is what resulted in the mutation but the yellow ones were born around a year or so ago. I’m considering isolating the population in a new tank and seeing if I can establish a breeding population.

I hope you do decide to isolate the yellows…they are beautiful, and it would be great to have them established in n the hobby someday! 😁
