filter for breeding tank

RIght now I have a 20 gal planted tank with about the entire bottow covered in dwarf hairgrass. One corner has some stem plants and there is a piece of driftwood in the other corner. Right now I am just running a powerhead for water movement and i have a few ottos in there to get any algea that might pop up on the glass. My question is, what type of filtration should I use? I don't k now what kind of a bio-load cherry red shrimp cause and I want to try to breed them. Thanks for any help.

A lot of people use sponge filters. You can also use a hang on back power filter if you use a sponge of some type to prevent the shrimp from being pulled into the filter.

for a 20G, i'd use a double-sponge filter with plants as an added buffer. plants lessen the impact of the bioload itself.

an hob filter with a sponge as a pre-filter (over the intake valve) as S pointed out is a good option as well.

I am using a power filter (box filter hang behind the top of the tank) with my 10 gal. A foam is around the intake tube secured by a rubber-band.

So far so good and hope I won't find babies in the filter box when they hatch.

thanks for the help. I am trying to conserve CO2 for the plants becuase I love the growth I am getting right now. I am thinking of maybe getting a small canister filter but they seem so expensive.

Hi,

I have a very easy solution.
I use a half a sponge that that are normally used for Aquaclear.
I make and X with some scissors cutting half way down the sponge.
Then just shove it over the filet intake.

I have found that this works very well for baby livebearers.
The only thing is that you need to squeeze it clean every so often.

PS I have tried the fine-meshed net/panty hose and they clog up to fast.
