I have seen some pictures of people keeping shrimp in bare tanks with just sand or substrate. Just curious how important are plants to these guys in a species only tank.

The benefit of plants lies in the fact that they help keep the water quality up. Plants are not not necessary for a species tank. If you do your regular water changes and feed sparingly, then everything should be fine.

java moss IMO! it gives the babies a place to hide and they are easy to grow... they also like to pick from them... like mustafa said, "plants keep the water quality up", so its always good to have plants

Hi Solaris, I agree with everything mentioned already, and something that's really nice about plants, even plastic ones, or other items in the tank is that it increases surface area. That way shrimps have plenty of places to hide, forage for food etc. There are often algae and bits of food the shrimp can scrounge around for and they appreciate being able to hide when pregnant or after a molt, too.

I'm in the school of thought that small freshwater shrimp are happier and do better in tanks with lots of different things to climb around on. Large rocks, rock structures/arrangements, dense aquatic moss growth, floating plants, driftwood, branches.... The more the better, so long as there's still room to move and adequate water volume. Unnecessary in all-srimp tanks with no predators, but still better with than without.

Hi Solaris, I would have to say java moss, and duck weed... Shrimp love to hang around the surface area 2, mine hang upside down from my duckweed... Duckweed grows like crazy 2. Why have plants? well they cure high levels of nitrates in your water. Reduces shrimp and fishes stress , less stress more healthy and more color. What a boring life must it be in a bare aquarium

give them plants to chase each other through.
