Curious...why is my blue shrimp not blue?

Post by tangyp »

Added about 5 blue shrimps to my aquarium recently. Whilst 1 or 2 of them is really totally blue, the rest are just transparent with slight hint of blue.

Just wondering what causes the blue effect and is something wrong that my blue shrimps are not blue at all?

Thanks!

My guess: the blue ones are females, the transparent ones are males.

Brad is most likely correct. The other possiblity is that you have two different species. A lot of dealers will sell a group of several species of shrimp under one name because they don't know any better. A great example are the so called "Rainbow Shrimp", which are usually at least 3 different species when you buy them from a dealer.

Yes...it's a possibility. The blue ones are slightly bigger than the non blue ones.
