A few Red Cherry shrimp questions

Hi,

I have had my RCS (10 mostly young one's)for about a month now, read a fair bit before I got them, and even more in the past month, can't find the answers to the following questions-your help is appreciated.

1.
Can you tell by looking at a shrimp if it is underfed/overfed-I'm so worried about giving them just the right amount of food-in addition to the algae in the tank.

2.
I had one female saddled and her eggs dropped-then she dropped the eggs onto some java moss-couple days ago-eggs are still there.

a)any chance if they remain uneaten-assuming they are fertilized-that they will hatch?
b) I have another female very red-hard to see if she is saddled or not-any other way to tell if she is capable of producing eggs?

3.
Females tend to hide more than the males-is this typical behaviour or should i be worrying about male to female ratios?

Thats all for now-thanks.

Hi Redbridge,

1.) I'll let someone else answer this, though my one comment would be that shrimp seem to go with the flow and continually forage, whether you've given them commercial food or if they're scrounging around for algae. So in a well-aged tank, they usually have a continual source of food unless it's crowded in there.

2.) a. I'm afraid if the eggs are not on her swimmerettes, they will not hatch. The mother needs to have them on her belly so she can keep them clean and aerate them.

2.) b. I suspect most females are capable of producing eggs once they are mature. So once they are about 3 months, give or take a few weeks, they are capable.

3.) Yes, I would say that's typical behavior. My experience is that pregnant females tend to hide the most. When my female is not pregnant, she doesn't usually hide. My male does not hide at all. I guess one exception is, they hide and rest after molting.

Is this one of those "A watched pot never boils" thing? ;-) It sounds like they're still young; hopefully they'll produce for you soon. :D

Thanks for your responses GunMetalblue.

I believe you hit the nail on the head with your "watched pot" comment, I'm being impatient-I was like this when I first got guppies, couldn't believe I had no pregnant one's==NOW....tons o' big bellies.

thanks,
