Yellow thing thats not eggs in a cherry shrimp?

Post by Terran »

This is the best picture I could take.....

This is one of the "cherry shrimp" that I bought from a local pet store....

Image

In all the pictures of Red Cherry shrimp that ive seen none seem to have this yellowness in their stomach....

Is this due to the type of food its be grazing for?....or could it be an encapsulated worm or something...Hmm just read some post on another forum that said they probally are eggs in production in the ovaries?...anyone know for sure?

They are eggs developing in their ovaries. That shrimp is a female. And for future references, please do a "Search" for your questions before you post them on here as this have been asked quiet a few times already. Thank you.

I did do a search before I posted....

Just the way I was looking at the situation caused me to use phrases to search with that didnt yield any results that this was relevent to what it actually was ...(I was typing in things like "Parasite", "Stomach", "etc" into the search)....

Yeah so in hindsight my question was a stupid one...but Im excited about my developing shrimp and any change in them I want to talk about till they are breeding successfully....

I apologize

Not a problem. We are here to help, not to hassle you. Some folks may get a little testy if they think you haven't done your homework first.

If you have males, you will have loads of babies about 4 weeks after they transfer to the swimmerlets. If they drop the eggs after a day or so, you need some males. Unless the shrimp are tank bred, your chances of getting a male are slim. If you don't have any light colored ones with no saddles, go back to the LFS and get some, or there will be no babies.

The red cherry shrimp I bought from my LFS a few weeks back all looked like the one in Terran's photo. I went back to the LFS and bought the slimmest, palest shrimp in the tank. Within a few days of being placed with the rest of my shrimp, "he" molted, started turning redder, and developed one of those saddle things. I am currently trying to buy a batch of tank-raised shrimp over the internet. I hope I have better luck finding a male soon--those gals in my tank must be feeling pretty frustrated.

EDIT--Hmmm...maybe that shrimp is a male after all. A couple of the females now (May 18 ) look like they're carrying eggs on their swimmerets. The shrimp I purchased on the internet are coming over in a couple of days anyway, so my tank will have more shrimp in it one way or another.

Order a minimum order from Mustafa and ask him to be sure to include a couple of males just to be sure. LFS will have nearly 100% females unless they get them form local breeders. The red ones sell, the pale ones don't, unless you are someone in the know. Sex ratio in tank bred shrimp are about 50-50 so if you get 6 you are pretty well assured of getting a male. The females seem to be smarter, so if they just swish and bag, you'll probablyget more males than females. It only takes one male for many females, so they don't need to ask for directions...

My original plan was to get a minimum order from Mustafa, but he's Temporarily out of stock! and I'm impatient (as I said before, I imagine that my gals are getting pretty frustrated).

On the subject of shrimp parasites--I've seen ghost shrimp with parasitic horsehair worms coiled up inside of them. They get to be several times longer than the shrimp they're living in, so they have to be fairly tightly coiled. They're bright white, and easily visible inside their transparent hosts. It's not a pretty sight.

Yeah right after my order was filled Mustafa went out of stock...so I guess I was the lucky one :D

SO I have the four I got from my LFS(which apparently are likely to be all females) and the ten I received from Mustafa...so hopefully I got some males with the ten I got from him...

Hi-kinda late entering this topic, but my female red cherry looks identical to yours in the photo. There seems to be a gap between the first and second shells and it's yellowish/orange in there. I thought she was getting ready to molt or something so I'm glad to hear she's developing eggs. This just started when my other shrimp began growing to a cm (She was the only "adult size" shrimp in the batch of 15 I bought online). I didn't see any shrimp in my tank for a couple weeks.....then saw one, two at a time, and today I counted eight at once-pretty interesting these little guys!

Yeah my 29 Gallon Tank(which has my shrimp in it) is at the head of my Bed....so I can lay there watching  ...

Almost everytime I come in my room I do a count...usually I average like 8 or nine.....sometimes only 5....but there should be at least 14 in there somewhere ....I havent found any corpses yet ;-) ...cant wait till they start breeding...

Im loving these shrimp so much Im thinking about getting into Crayfish....

I like the idea of those Marble Crayfish (but seems like an unlikely endeveor finding one)...but perhaps I should go with the Dwarf Cajuns....

I was even thinking about going around to local ponds/lakes and trying to catch me a breeding pair of Gammarus so that I could start up a seperate tank devoted to those guys....lol....damn first guppies and now shrimp.... turned me into such a nerd... :-D

So these are eggs that will drop in time? Then this is good way to tell the sex of the shrimp!

Thanks :D :)
