My first berried shrimp!

Post by Cakelake »

Hello! After 20 weeks of having my shrimp I noticed Yesterday That one of them was carrying two eggs! Is this unusual that she is carrying so few eggs? Does this indicate poor health or such in the tank? Also is it ok to add more water to the tank with the eggs in there? I don't want to stress her out and cause her to drop her eggs.

Thanks!

It is fairly common to drop most or all eggs the first time they become berried. Don't forget it is a learning experience for the shrimp as well.

Congratulations! I saw my first berried shrimp May 11th and today is the first time I have larvae, so be patient. Jack

Another question, do the eggs hatch at the same time or does the time vary (hours, days) between the hatching of each egg carried by the female? Because I noticed today that she was only carrying one and I'm wondering if it's possible that it hatched or if she dropped it. It's possible she's been carrying the eggs for a long time and I just noticed as half of my shrimp are usually hiding within their porus rock.

They don't all hatch at once, I've seen times where as much as a day may pass between the first larva being seen and the rest hatching. However, if any do hatch successfully you should be able to tell, the larva don't hide but float in plain view. Its only after they metamorphose into tiny shrimp that they go into hiding for a while.

She'll carry again. :) And to answer one of your previous questions...they tend to all hatch within a few hours.
