In this day and age, there is no reason to cycle with fish any longer -- the ease of ammonia or even a cocktail shrimp to decompose and produce ammonia. Putting a fish through a cycle is pure torture, in my humble opinion. Deliverme is correct in that many planted tanks, especially those with CO2 an...

Yes, me and those shrimp are pretty lucky. My Botia Sidthimunki are still pretty small, but the clowns are big. Luckily, the clowns think I'm an evil monster so if I'm anywhere around, they will hide. If I sit on the floor about ten feet from the tank, they'll come out, but no closer than that.

There are a lot of plants actually, but I don't think it is java moss. More than likely it is Hygrophilia polysperma you are thinking about.

There I was taking a last look at my 55 for the night.....

(this tank I run the lights at night to give ME a 'nightlight' and to have different maintenance schedules for each tank), anyway...I had just put the big light fixture on (I use little undercabinet strips to feed and do water changes because the big fixture covers the entire top, and it is heavy).....

I didn't think Kent Turbo Calcium was carbonate, but I could be wrong.

The reef calcium tends to be a few more dollars than the powdered calcium if I remember correctly. I think it was only a few dollars.

microwaved to soft as if for human consumption, and a scoop of the middle given to the shrimp. The rest IS for human consumption! LOL.
Sweet potato is cooked -- microwaved, then cooled to room temp.

Oh my. Well, I've definitely been called a tiny shrimp multiple times in my life! (I'm only 4'11"). This is the first time it's a good thing, though! :P

LOL, Winwin -- that is actually already explained in this thread. But, it is a sweet potato, microwaved to soft as if for human consumption, and a scoop of the middle given to the shrimp. The rest IS for human consumption! LOL.

Thank you -- I love my little shrimpies!

I'm not sure, actually as I don't like beer and I am only now beginning to tolerate wine (whites only). I think maybe they also use it to raise the ph of the brew?

I add Calcium Carbonate -- which I purchased from a Beer and wine homebrewing company. I'm not sure where you might be able to locate it. It is simply powdered form and therefore I can control the amount I put in everyday. If you get some, make sure that it is food grade. It would dissolve faster as...

When you added the shells, did the ph go up? It may not be dissolving rapidly enough. One person suggested using egg shells, baked, then crushed, although I've never tried this myself. Another person suggested cuttle bone (normally used for pet birds), a thumbnail sized piece broken off and added to...
