Tanks on the floor have several problems. Of course, it's hard to see what's going on in there, so you don't generally pay as much attention to them. As someone said, you also have the problem of gravity when it comes to water changes. Also, if the floor is tile, linoleum or unfinished, you may have...

With the hydra, I read somewhere (might of been here) that red ramshorns would eat them. At that time, I only had brown ones in my shrimp tank, so I added some red ones from another tank. I killed the hydra that I could see with hydrogen peroxide, but I was still seeing one here and there in the tan...

Pellia (or whatever it's supposed to be called) is nice in a shrimp tank, and less of a pain than riccia. It's not the same lime green, but the shrimp seem to enjoy it, and it's less demanding on light than riccia. Najas guadalupensis is nice, and shrimp love it, but it looks messy and grows really ...

Taxonimy is interesting, if you're interested in it. For those who just want to be able to know what creatures we have, it can be frustrating. We can hardly blame fish stores for using so many common names, when the scientific names change so often. I understand that our system for naming thi...

I generally use the Jager heaters, too. I have had both Stealth and the titanium heaters fail on me. I tend to think it's a general problem with aquarium equipment these days... it's just not built to last. I've had cherry shrimp in my outside pond in temperatures exceeding 90F. My indoor tanks ofte...

I've used copper-removing compounds in my freshwater tank in the past. It wasn't a shrimp tank, though. If you look on the directions of the jar in the fish store, it should tell you. Another product you can use is Poly-Filter, which is a special type of floss that removes many different chemicals, ...

One thing I can report, although I don't know if it will help anyone much. I have used bloodworms soaked in Gel-Tek Ultra Cure PX (for internal parasites) medication, without any harm to Amano shrimp. The active ingredients are: Praziquantel 0.0057% Flubenol 0.03% Metronidazole 0.30% Praziquantel an...

I'm not even going to try keeping crystal reds unless I can afford a chiller. Our tanks often get in the mid-80s during the day, even with air conditioning on. I just can't afford another $500 electric bill to keep the temps lower in the house for five months of the year. I can report that my cherry...
