I had a pretty bad infestation with my smaller tank. I stopped feeding for about 2-3 months. Like Mustafa stated, they will starve to death.

At this point, all the nutrients have definitely permeated the water. I am not an expert, but I would try and suck up the bottom as much as possible with 1/4 - 1/2 water change.

I'm new to keeping aquariums, but salt never evaporates. You would lose salt slowly from the aquarium if you test with those tiny test tubes. I would recommend Instant Ocean Bio-Spira. I had a very similar experience where my shrimp almost died on a transfer to a new tank. I added this into the new tank to help it cycle faster.

With the crabs you have that have coralline algae on the shells, is the algae still alive in brackish water? Reason I am asking is that I have all green algae rocks in my nano-tank, and I noticed this week that there is purple algae growing on a few of them.
