New Yellow Opae tank
Following up on my earlier post regarding my yellow Opae sub-population, I decided to set up a dedicated tank to isolate the yellow variants and see if they might establish a breeding colony. After close examination, I was surprised to find over a dozen mostly or entirely yellow examples in one of ...

Re: Unusual algae - Opinions re: species?
Hi Mustafa. It just appeared on one of the rocks some time ago spontaneously and has subsequently spread to all of the dragon stone. The Opae also very actively graze on it (pics attached).

Re: Shrimp, Snails and Dwarf hermit crabs coexisting well
It’s my pleasure. FYI, he periodically sheds his skin and just went through another molt cycle the other day. Here is his shed, which looks amazingly intact (I always get scared when I see these sheds sitting on the bottom of the tank as I fear he’s died).

Re: Latest tank and yellow Opae sub-population
Ah, I’ve decided to establish a stand alone breeding take for them John. It’s just cycling now and should be good to go in about three weeks. Will post some pics when I introduce the yellow shrimp into the new environment. Here it is cycling. Stay tuned!

Re: My smallest Opae tank, thriving for three years
Hey John. I picked them up from Aquarium depot (see https://aquariumdepot.com/amphipods-copepods-1000-gammarus-sp/?searchid=416494&search_query=Amphipods). It was an assortment of amphipods and copepods. While not specifically oriented towards brackish water, I’ve found a substantial portion of the ...

Unusual algae - Opinions re: species?
I wanted to share some pics of an unusual form of algae that has spread across the dragon stone in one of my mature tanks. Interestingly it’s only established itself on the dragon stone but is absent on other surfaces (eg, the substrate, shells, sea fans, etc). Curious if anyone knows what species ...

My smallest Opae tank, thriving for three years
I wanted to share the smallest Opae tank that I’ve set up, which uses a diminutive lab reactor (5000ml / ~1.3 gallon). It’s been running for about three years and I originally established the ecosystem using water, algae, snails, amphipods, copepods and larval-stage Opae Ula from my other tanks, so ...

Re: Latest tank and yellow Opae sub-population
Thanks for the kind words Aquarimax 🙏. The Opae did come from Mustafa’s stock albeit they have been breeding across my tanks for over a decade so they have many generations of offspring. This tank was initially seeded from two different tanks where I took both adult and juvenile examples (and one ...

Latest tank and yellow Opae sub-population
I wanted to share with the group my latest Opae tank, which I set up around 18 months ago. It’s my second largest tank at around 8 gallons and I used a large Pyrex laboratory reactor. In particular, it’s the only tank of my five that has bred some hybrid Opae that are bright yellow in color. There ...

Re: Shrimp, Snails and Dwarf hermit crabs coexisting well
As I haven’t posted for a while given some password reset problems, I wanted to share a quick update on one of my oldest Opae tanks. It’s an 3 gallon set-up and around 13 years old. It has roughly 20 Opae (they haven’t bred in some time unlike a few of my other tanks) and I still have my friendly ...

Opae Ula environment 7.0
I thought that I’d share the final set-up of my seventh Opae environment with the group. This is the smallest of my ecosystems which is using a 5000ml (~1.3 gallon) laboratory reactor. Many thanks to Mohamed for the Opae (15 to start). I also introduce 15 Opae fry from one of my other tanks that ...

My latest (7th) Opae Ula tank
I wanted to share with the group my latest Opae tank, which I set up in a 5000ml / ~1.3 gallon laboratory reactor. This is my 7th tank and smallest I’ve constructed to date (my others range from 3 to 11 gallons). This one was established using algae, snails and larval-stage Opae from my other tanks ...

Batophora occidentalis 2.0 (growth in a new tank)
As I noted in my prior post regarding Batophora occidentalis, I had I initially introduced it into three of my tanks but only one successfully took and that tank took months to evidence any growth well after the algae appeared to have totally died off after it’s introduction. This dates back to late ...

Re: Shrimp, Snails and Dwarf hermit crabs coexisting well
Quick update. The zebra dwarf hermit crabs have all acclimated well and grazing actively on the algae in the tanks. They also periodically congregate together, which is pretty funny to watch.

Re: Shrimp, Snails and Dwarf hermit crabs coexisting well
Indeed OpaeOasis. It’s both fun snd intellectually rewarding seeing what can be achieved in these environments. For reference here is my +10 year old crab grazing on Algae right next to the shrimp. They totally coexist without any friction. C5E53198-41DC-4AD9-A727-1D354D026F39.jpeg EAF3DEAE-BF8E ...
