Re: My 3rd DIY Opae Ula tank

Finally seeing some biofilm forming on the surface of the water... as well as some small little dead flies on it... the light seems to attracts insects... my other smaller tanks have proper cover so no such problem... and the water seems to evaporate quite fast... i need to top up 500ml in less than...

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

Just an update... 1 month into my new tank... the only shrimp that i put in had molted 3 times and algae is forming on the glass and other surfaces... i never knew they molt so fast... perhaps it is the new environment causing it to molt more frequently? I don’t usually notice molting in my other ta...

Re: New Belgian opae ula owner!

Horned nerites are preferred here in Singapore because owners mostly kept small tanks... they are much smaller than the other nerites... so it will look nicer on small tanks... but despite their small size... they are extremely hardworking... I would say 1 should be enough... give it a week or so to...

Re: New Belgian opae ula owner!

Just an update as it has been a while. Shrimps are doing fine, but the diatoms (brown algae) are really annoying. I have two options: leaving the tank so all glass gets covered with the ugly diatoms (and i dont see any shrimp), or cleaning the glass and disturbing the shrimp so they become pale and...

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

I'm a little surprised by the answers, for me "not cycling" a tank is to avoid all together, except in emergency situations. Because your tank will cycle, no matter what you do. In any new tank system, cycling happens. Beneficial bacteria and algea (=processing ammonia/nitrites/nitrates) ...

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

Yup i was trying to experiment without cycling... I setup the tank totally new... with newly washed and dried substrate, new glass container, some coral pcs... newly mixed bottled distilled water with sea salt to abt 1.012 salinity... added some marimo moss balls... the only contact with an establis...

Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

I just setup a very small tank and put 1 shrimp in it. It had been 3 days and the shrimp is still alive and actively swimming. At first it just went swimming in cycle as it seems stressed. But after 1 day, it started to swim more like it is looking for food although its color is not as red as before...

Re: Do i need a heater?

Re: Do i need a heater?

Do i need a heater?

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)

Ryangiggs, besides the temperature difference and the new light with strong leds (Zedlight UFO, is it?), what else might be different? Did the store personnel feed the shrimp at the store? The fact that they’re berrying means the conditions are good for adults, maybe something isn’t quite right for...

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)

Thanks for the reply. My tank is quite a mature tank which i bought from a shop... it was already a thriving tank with quite a few berried shrimps and a number of larvaes and shrimplets... there are probably abt 200 shrimps now... the shop owner claimed that they started out with just 30+ shrimps.....
