I don't know what to say about your brown sand, but if I had to guess it could be from having nobody to clean out the algae in the sand (Snails).
The Macro algae grows pretty fast, but the algae moss balls are a lot slower at reproducing (Splitting).

Hi,
I am a complete newbie at this, but from what I can tell, besides being part of their natural environment, lava rocks are extremely beneficial because they have a very large surface area, which allows for more bacteria/algae growth.
Plus, in my opinion, they look super cool!

I am a complete newbie at this, but from what I can tell, besides being part of their natural environment, lava rocks are extremely beneficial because they have a very large surface area, which allows for more bacteria/algae growth.
Plus, in my opinion, they look super cool!
